SAN JOSE — A 46-year-old man died in a suspected DUI crash Sunday night on Highway 85 after being pinned underneath the car he had been riding in when it overturned, the California Highway Patrol San Jose said in a press release.
Authorities arrested the driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old woman from San Jose, on suspicion of driving under the influence, the CHP said.
At about 8:06 p.m. Sunday, the Golden Gate Communications Center recieved a call reporting a solo collision on southbound SR-85 north of Almaden Expressway, authorities said.
Investigators found that a black 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan had been traveling southbound on SR-85 at an unknown speed when its driver left the roadway off to the right side, authorities said. The car traveled up an enbankment and overturned, ejecting the male passenger and pinning him underneath the vehicle. The man had not been wearing a seatbelt.
An ambulance responded to the scene, where the male passenger was pronounced deceased. The driver was transported to Valley Medical Center with minor injuries, authorities said.
The name of the person killed was not released publicly pending confirmation of their identity and notification of their next of kin.
Following the crash, all three lanes of southbound SR-85 were closed for about one hour, authorities added.
