A person who appears to have been walking on a freeway died early Friday after being hit by a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal collision happened around 5:15 a.m. and shut down all northbound lanes of the Highway 101 connector to Interstate 280 in San Francisco, according to the agency. The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic that remained in effect until about 7:15 a.m.

Authorities did not identify the dead person immediately.

Few details of what happened were available immediately, but initial reports confirmed by the CHP indicated that a person called in and said they believed they’d hit a person on the highway.

The CHP did not have a time estimate for when the northbound lanes on the highway would reopen. They urged motorists to seek alternative routes.
