RICHMOND — The “heartbroken” family of a man shot and killed by Richmond police on Monday said he was a U.S. Marine and a devoted father.
In a statement for an online fundraiser, the family identified the man as 27-year-old Angel Montano, of Richmond. The fundraiser seeks $10,000 for funeral expenses and had raised $8,090 by 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Two Richmond police officers fired their weapons at Montano after responding to a domestic disturbance in the 400 block of First Street about 5 p.m. Monday. In a statement, police spokesperson Lt. Donald Patchin, officers arrived to find Montano holding a knife in each hand.
Patchin said officers had been called to the residence on reports that the man was threatening to kill his mother and brother. The officers fired when the man confronted them with at least one knife after announcing they were at the residence, Patchin said.
Montano died at the scene.
Montano’s family declined comment when contacted by this news organization on Wednesday but spoke of him in a statement written on the fundraiser’s page.
“Angel was a proud U.S Marine, a devoted son, brother, father and to many a loyal friend,” the statement said. “Angel brought light and strength into every room he entered. His unexpected loss has left our family heartbroken, and we are doing everything we can to give him the memorial he deserves.”
Police have not identified the officers, nor have they released any video footage from the officers’ body-worn cameras. Per department policy, both officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office also is investigating the shooting.
