A woman was killed and another was injured after being mauled by dogs near a San Bernardino park on Thursday, July 31, police said.

Officers responded to reports of a dog attack in the area of Pacific Street and Perris Hill Park Road, near Perris Hill Park, around 5 p.m., Capt. Nelson Carrington of the San Bernardino Police Department said.

The attack took place near a homeless encampment, he said.

While an officer was giving aid to an injured woman reportedly bitten by one of the dogs, two dogs – pit bulls or pit bull mixes – charged at the officer and victim, according to police. The officer fired at the animals, killing one dog, Carrington said.

About 30 yards away, police found another woman with severe injuries, also believed to be caused by a dog mauling. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

The second woman was also taken to a hospital in unknown condition. The identities of both women were not released.

San Bernardino Animal Control responded to the scene and removed 14 dogs from the area as part of the investigation.

No further details were immediately available.
