SJSU Storylines: The Spartans are still searching for their first win against an FBS team in 2025 as their only win of the season so far came against the FCS school Idaho. … Kicker Mathias Brown takes over field goal duties from Denis Lynch, who missed six of his first 10 attempts. Brown, in his second season, has never attempted a field goal in his collegiate career. … Running back Jabari Bates has been ruled out for the season after suffering a lower body injury against Stanford. Bates was the Spartans leading rusher against Texas (44 yards) and against Idaho (131 yards). … Spartans starting safety Jalen Apalit-Williams is ruled out for the game against New Mexico with an injury according to the official Mountain West injury report.

New Mexico Storylines: After being picked to finish eleventh in the Mountain West in the preseason media poll, New Mexico has gotten off to a 3-1 start under head coach Jason Eck in his first year with the program. His previous head coaching gig was at Idaho from 2022-24. … New Mexico’s only loss of the season is to then ranked No.14 Michigan. … Lobos quarterback Jack Layne played under Eck the previous three seasons at Idaho. …  New Mexico has not defeated SJSU since 2016 and has not defeated SJSU at its home stadium since 1969.
