Gavin Newsom, both above, are on most short lists to replace him, pushing them toward a possible rivalry because they can’t be on the same White House campaign ticket.

At a time when the country remains deeply divided between urban and rural voters and Trump’s influence over the Republican party continues to grow, is California’s political baggage too heavy for both of them?
