FREMONT — It started off with a report of a misdemeanor petty theft, a woman who authorities say entered a local Walmart and left without paying for $37.90 worth of stuff.

Then, the 34-year-old Newark woman allegedly attempted to run over a security guard who tried to stop her, driving a 2014 Nissan Altima at the guard as he tried to make a citizen’s arrest, according to police. Now, the woman faces a felony assault charge on top of a misdemeanor theft count, court records show.

The incident occurred Dec. 17 at a Walmart in Fremont, according to court records. Police located the suspect at her Newark apartment the following day and brought the security guard so he could identify her, authorities said.

Alameda County Judge Kevin Wong released the woman at her Dec. 19 court appearance but ordered her to stay away from the alleged victim and “all Walmart stores,” court records show. She is next due in court on Jan. 22.
