WALNUT CREEK — A gas station employee survived after being shot during an attempted robbery early Monday, and police arrested a 16-year-old in the aftermath, authorities said.

All of it happened about 3:55 a.m. Monday at the Kwik Stop Gas Station in the 1300 block of S. California Boulevard.

In a statement, Walnut Creek police Lt. Drew Olson said detectives arrested the suspect about 6 p.m. with assistance from Oakland police. Olson said they arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder and attempted robbery.

The employee of the gas station went by ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound, Olson said. He was expected to survive.

Olson said the preliminary investigation indicated that two people wearing masks entered the store and tried to steal cigarettes. The employee confronted the two suspects, and a struggle ensued, leading to the shooting, Olson said.

Police are still looking for information and asked anyone who may be able to help to contact their anonymous tip line at 925-943-5865.
