OAKLAND — A 67-year-old woman sitting in her car Thursday afternoon in the Piedmont Avenue area suffered lacerations when a robber smashed a vehicle window to steal her purse, authorities said.
The robbery happened about 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of 40th Street, which is between Piedmont Avenue and Howe Street.
According to initial police reports, the woman had just left a bank in the area and was sitting in her car in a parking lot when a man approached the vehicle and used some kind of object to smash out the passenger side window.
The man then reached inside and grabbed the woman’s purse containing cash and personal belongings, which was on the seat. The woman briefly struggled with the man over the purse but he was able to run away with it to a nearby vehicle, according to the initial reports.
The woman suffered lacerations to her arm from shattered glass but did not require hospitalization, authorities said.
Detailed descriptions of the robber and the vehicle he fled in were not released.
