PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — This week, high humidity will combine with temperatures in the 90s to create a dangerously hot stretch of weather between Tuesday and Sunday.
The Heat Index, which is how the temperature feels like, will hover around 100 by midweek. Lows only drop to his mid-70s and highs, so it won't ease much overnight.
Philadelphia and surrounding urban areas stay warm 24 hours a day due to the urban heat island effect, the absorption and retention of heat by sidewalks and buildings during the day.
A heat wave was defined in the 1990s for three consecutive days, and this constant heat can have cumulative effects on the human body. Next week, the 90s can appear up to 6 days in a row.
Heatstroke and heat exhaustion are two heat-related conditions of concern. The best way to prevent heat stroke is to stay hydrated with water or soft drinks and limit the amount of time you spend outside in the shade or in air-conditioned areas.
Heat stroke warnings may be issued for parts of the region if the weather is hot enough for the rest of the week.
Something to consider in hot weather is neighbors who are elderly or have health problems. If possible, keep your pet inside or provide a shaded area and cool, fresh drinking water.
Take frequent cold showers if you feel too hot. Do not leave children, pets, or adults with disabilities unattended in the vehicle. Temperatures can be lethal in minutes.
