VACAVILLE — A crew of jail inmates on clean-up duty with an officer overseeing them saved an 18-year-old woman who was being stabbed on a bike trail Tuesday, police said.

The assault of the woman happened in the area of Brookdale Court on the Alamo Creek bike trail, Vacaville police said in a statement. Officers were called there about 10 a.m.

According to police, an officer from the California Department of Corrections and the clean-up crew intervened when they saw a man stabbing the woman.

In their statement, police said they were “incredibly thankful for the CDCR employee and inmates whose bravery undoubtedly saved the woman’s life.”

Officers provided life-saving measures to the woman at the scene until an ambulance rushed her to a hospital, police said. She was in reported to be in stable condition at a hospital Wednesday night.

Police arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of attempted homicide. He was booked into Solano County Jail.

Police said they believe the incident is an isolated one and that the suspect did not know the victim. They encouraged anyone who goes hiking, biking or jogging to be aware of their surroundings and to tell someone what time they expect to return.
