The Counter Burger, from its namesake restaurant, The Counter. Fresh ground beef, provolone, lettuce, tomato, sauteed mushrooms and fried onion strings on a dusted potato roll.
The Counter, a longtime staple for customized gourmet burgers and milkshakes, has ended its 14-year run in Walnut Creek, just one of a slew of restaurants that said goodbye in 2022.
The restaurant at 1699 N. California Ave. was part of the popular fine-casual chain offering seemingly endless customizations — via a paper-and-pencil-form — for your burger, from turkey, buffalo and meatless patties to the type of bun, sauce, cheese and other toppers. The Counter’s last day of business was Dec. 29.
According to a note posted on the door, the closure was prompted by the restaurant’s lease coming to an end.
“Unfortunately, rising costs and prohibitive future occupancy costs have made it impractical to continue,” the note read. “We have cherished our time serving the community in Walnut Creek and greater Contra Costa County, both inside and outside the restaurant.”
The Counter still has locations in Fremont, Cupertino, Mountain View and Redwood City. Details: www.thecounter.com.
