A Nebraska man died after being pulled unconscious from the water at La Jolla Cove.

Jared Schreck, 44, of Omaha, had been among a group scuba diving Sunday morning near the beach, said a report from the San Diego County medical examiner.

Around 9:30 a.m., some of his companions realized he was not with them and they began searching. He was found submerged, without his breathing regulator in place.

The man was pulled to shore, and lifeguards and then paramedics attempted to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at a La Jolla hospital.

The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be cardiopulmonary arrest with drowning, caused by coronary artery disease.

La Jolla Cove is a popular site for beginning scuba divers, known for its kelp forests, underwater caves and marine life including seals and sea lions.
