OAKLAND — A federal grand jury has indicted a 46-year-old Richmond man on charges that he smuggled ammunition from the United States to Brazil, authorities said.

The indictment accuses the man of smuggling thousands of rounds of ammunition in two container shipments that were exported from the Port of Oakland in 2021, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey of the Northern District of California. The man did not have an export license to do so and was in violation of the Export Control Reform Act and other regulations associated with it.

Authorities arrested the man on Feb. 29. He has been released on an unspecified bond and is scheduled next to appear in federal court Wednesday.

If Ferreira is convicted, he could receive as many as 10 years in federal prison.
