BERKELEY — A person walked onto BART tracks in Berkeley early Thursday, causing a major delay for trains, officials said.

BART police detained the person but it was unclear whether they made an arrest, agency spokesperson Jim Allison said via email.

The trespasser was spotted on tracks between the Ashby and Downtown Berkeley stations at about 7:20 a.m., according to BART. Trains were delayed for a time by at least 20 minutes.

Allison said a train operator saw the person walking on the tracks. That train and others held in place while authorities were contacted.

The major delay affected trains going in the Richmond, Berryessa and Millbrae directions.
